With the aim of improving the traveler experience and comfort, in 2020 the studio of Juan Carlos León Arquitectos and CSS Constructores, together with the Porcelanosa Associate in Colombia, undertook the renovation of the Matecaña International Airport.
Lorena Serna Soto, manager of PORCELANOSA Bogota and PORCELANOSA Medellin, reveals the main features of the project and how was the process of material selection and construction.
Architects Juan Carlos de León and Carlos Mauricio Giraldo in collaboration with Marcela Villegas (founder of Entornos Productivos) came to us to specify a resistant and durable concrete looking porcelain tile for high-traffic areas; they wanted a product that had shade variation to make it natural and available in different colors to combine them in different areas of the project. With the concept defined and after reviewing options, the material selected was Bottega Collection in Caliza, Acero and Topo tones.
We acted as brand representatives throughout the entire process: Advising on product selection, working with our team at the factory to provide the best technical support for a proper installation and product guarantee. We also tried to be competitive in price and deliver the material in a short time. In addition, we provided the material needed to perform the different tests that confirmed its resistance.
The architectural design was inspired by the significant features of the coffee cultural landscape and reflects its great mountains, vegetation and biodiversity. The airport was conceived as an open, illuminated space that would allow travelers to have a wide panorama of the runway.
The roof, inspired by the coffee mountains, is dressed in different shades of green on the windows and signs, the wall of the counters simulates the Gaudua plants of the area, and the floor balances the textures and contrasts.
This new terminal has been one of the most ambitious and largest projects in the city. It is a great project that will bring development to the region, since the connectivity and mobility around the terminal also set the standard for modernization. It is located in a strategic point of the coffee region, so the growth curve will surely be positive year after year.
